Nifty extends losses for fourth straight session on Thursday

Extending its losses for fourth straight session, Indian equity benchmark -- Nifty -- ended sharply lower on Thursday. Index made a negative start, as concerns over prolonged supply disruptions linked to the West Asia region continued to weigh on market sentiments. Besides, traders remained cautious after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that India received 87.4% of its long-period average (LPA) rainfall during the southwest monsoon season from June to September, recording a rainfall deficit of about 13% between June 1 and September 30. In second half of the session, index extended its losses as continued foreign fund outflow dampened investors' sentiments. As per exchange data, foreign institutional investors offloaded Indian equities worth Rs 10,148.41 crore on September 30, 2026. However, in last leg of the session, market witnessed some recovery but eventually ended near 22,400 mark.

Most of the sectorial indices ended in red except IT stocks. The top gainers from the F&O segment were MphasiS, Coforge and Siemens Energy India. On the other hand, the top losers were PB Fintech, Bajaj Auto and UNO Minda. In the index option segment, maximum OI continues to be seen in the 23400 - 23600 calls and 22900 - 23100 puts indicating this is the trading range expectation.

India Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge for market’s short-term expectation of volatility increased by 7.04% and reached 14.44. The 50 share Nifty down by 198.50 point or 0.88% to settle at 22,421.95.

Nifty October 2026 futures closed at 22520.00 (LTP) on Thursday, at a premium of 98.05 points over spot closing of 22421.95, while Nifty November 2026 futures ended at 22634.30 (LTP), at a premium of 212.35 points over spot closing. Nifty October futures saw an addition of 25,621 units, taking the total open interest (Contracts) to 3,02,776 units. The near month derivatives contract will expire on October 27, 2026. From the most active contracts, Infosys October 2026 futures traded at a premium of 4.00 points at 1039.00 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 1035.00. The numbers of contracts traded were 53,888. (Provisional)

HDFC Bank October 2026 futures traded at a premium of 1.60 points at 722.80 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 721.20. The numbers of contracts traded were 43,170. (Provisional)

Kotak Mahindra Bank October 2026 futures traded at a premium of 5.50 points at 423.85 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 418.35. The numbers of contracts traded were 28,603. (Provisional)

Bajaj Auto October 2026 futures traded at a premium of 25.00 points at 10070.00 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 10045.00. The numbers of contracts traded were 23,364. (Provisional)

Reliance Industries October 2026 futures traded at a premium of 6.80 points at 1174.50 (LTP) compared with spot closing of 1167.70. The numbers of contracts traded were 19,717. (Provisional)

Among, Nifty calls, 23000 SP from the October month expiry was the most active call with an addition of 13,406 units open interests. Among Nifty puts, 22000 SP from the October month expiry was the most active put with an addition of 8,819 units open interests. The maximum OI outstanding for Calls was at 23500 SP (1,40,126 units) and that for Puts was at 23000 SP (90,791units). The respective Support and Resistance levels of Nifty are: Resistance 22615.93 -- Pivot Point 22416.62 -- Support 22222.63.

The Nifty Put Call Ratio (PCR) finally stood at (0.99) for October month contract. The top five scrips with highest PCR on Bajaj Holdings & Investment (1.59), Astral (1.42), REC (1.18), Oberoi Realty (1.16), and Godrej Consumer Products (1.14).

Among most active underlying Kotak Mahindra Bank witnessed an addition of  9,513 units of Open Interest in the October month future, Infosys witnessed an addition of 9,461 units of Open Interest in the October month future, HDFC Bank witnessed a contraction of 657 units of Open Interest in the October month future, Bajaj Auto witnessed an addition of 2,062 units of Open Interest in the October month futures and Reliance Industries witnessed an addition of 4,674 units of Open Interest in the October month futures.
