Sep-21-2026

Domestic equity indices continued to trade higher in late morning deals amid firm global cues from the other Asian markets. Falling crude oil prices provided additional support to domestic sentiment. Further, sentiment was also supported by Indian rupee appreciating 16 paise to 95.79 against the dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on increased selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.

Sensex advanced by more than half percent while Nifty posted modest gains, driven by upward momentum in heavyweight stocks like HDFC Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ITC, and Reliance Industries. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in the green, following mostly positive cues from US markets on Friday.

Meanwhile, the commerce ministry in its latest data has showed that India's exports to core BRICS nations--China, South Africa, Brazil and Russia-- surged 34 per cent to $19.9 billion in April-August 2026-27 as compared to $14.9 billion in the corresponding period last year, highlighting the growing importance of the BRICS bloc for India's export growth. Their combined share in India's total exports increased to 9.2 per cent during the first five months of 2026-27 from 8.1 per cent a year earlier.

As India deepens its trade engagement with the BRICS bloc, strongest momentum is coming from the BRICS members, especially Core BRICS founding partners-- China, South Africa, Brazil, and Russia. BRICS originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Indonesia joined in 2025, while Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam became partner countries last year.

Among the four core BRICS economies, China and South Africa were the primary drivers of growth, contributing significantly to the overall increase. During this period, India's exports to China expanded by 39 per cent to reach $9.6 billion in the first five months of 2026-27. At the same time, South Africa recorded the fastest growth rate, with exports surging 58 per cent during the period. Brazil and Russia also maintained steady double-digit growth of 13 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively.

The export momentum is not limited to BRICS markets. India's shipments to Japan surged to $3.43 billion during April-August 2026-27, registering a 43 per cent growth over the same period last fiscal. India is steadily expanding its presence in key sectors that align with Japan's industrial requirements, ranging from energy products and electronics to advanced materials. The export momentum is being led by mineral fuels, which recorded an increase of $231.7 million (76 per cent), highlighting growing energy trade between the two countries. Simultaneously, exports of electronics and aluminium also recorded healthy growth. Similarly, India's exports to Italy witnessed a strong surge during the five months of 2026-27, rising to $3.92 billion from $3.02 billion in April-August 2025-26, reflecting a growth of about 30 per cent. On the other hand, India's exports to South Korea also increased 22% to $3.21 billion.
