Non-life insurers report 18% rise in gross direct premium underwritten for December

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 17.91% rise in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 28007.88 crore for the month of December 2025 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 23753.85 crore in the December 2024. 

Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 83.89%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 23747.78 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 20684.92 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 14.81%. Among all, premium of Navi General Insurance up by 187.73%, Raheja QBE General Insurance up by 171.59%, Acko General Insurance up by 43.47%, Liberty General Insurance Co up by 37.44% and HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co up by 35.75%. 

Standalone health insurers, with market share of 12.51%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 4,260.10 crore in December 2025 as compared to Rs 3,068.93 crore in December 2024, i.e. up by 38.81%. Among all, Galaxy Health Insurance Company up by 743.64%, Narayana Health Insurance company up by 414.81%, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Company up by 64.58% and Niva bupa health insurance company up by 52.74%. 

Specialised insurers showed de- growth of 65.43% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 438.94 crore in December 2025 as compared to Rs 1269.57 crore in the December 2024. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India down by 73.20% in the month of December 2025, while ECGC was up by 4.74%.
