CM Stalin hits back at Union Minister over remarks in LS
Mar-10-2025

Tamil Nadu (TN) Chief Minister M K Stalin hit out at Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging he spoke with ‘arrogance’ considering himself a king and asked him to control his tongue.

Stalin’s statement came after union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan referred to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam as ‘undemocratic and uncivilised’ during his speech in Parliament. Replying on the PM SHRI scheme during the Parliament’s Budget Session, Pradhan said the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has changed its stand on implementing the centrally-sponsored scheme which envisaged strengthening the schools managed by central, state or local bodies. He accused the state government of backtracking on its commitment. He went on to allege, ‘They are dishonest, and they are ruining the future of the students of Tamil Nadu. They are doing politics.’

Reacting to Pradhan’s statement, Stalin said, ‘Dharmendra Pradhan should control his tongue. You are insulting Tamilians. Does the PM accept your behaviour?’. Stalin also questioned Pradhan’s stance on the National Education Policy (NEP), stating, ‘isn’t it you who sent a letter saying that the Tamil Nadu government rejected the MoU for PM SHRI over the NEP [National Education Policy] and the three-language policy’. TN CM Stalin rejected the NEP and three-language policy, saying the DMK government functioned by respecting the views of the people unlike the BJP leaders who were bound by ‘words from Nagpur.’

Pradhan withdrew the word that was objected to by the DMK MPs and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla directed that it be expunged from the records. The DMK staged a protest over the Union Minister's remarks, leading to adjournment of the proceedings of the lower house of Parliament. The second phase of the budget session of Parliament has started today.
