Markets trade flat in late afternoon session amid volatility

Indian equity markets altered between green and negative territory in late afternoon session after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a nil tax on income up to Rs 12 lakh per annum under the New Tax Regime. Traders took note of report that Controller General of Accounts (CGA) in its latest data report has showed that the India’s fiscal deficit touched 56.7 per cent of the Budget Estimate (BE) level of Rs 16.13 lakh crore at the end of December 2024 (April-December). Sector wise, insurance companies remained in focused as government announced the increase in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the sector.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 77526.56, up by 25.99 points or 0.03% after trading in a range of 77006.47 and 77899.05. There were 15 stocks advancing against 15 stocks declining on the index.

The broader indices were trading mixed; the BSE Mid cap index declined 0.15%, while Small cap index was up by 0.39%.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were FMCG up by 3.50%, Realty up by 3.40%, Consumer Disc up by 3.09%, Consumer Durables up by 2.91% and Auto was up by 1.95%, while Capital Goods down by 3.24%, Industrials down by 2.70%, PSU down by 2.10%, Power down by 1.79% and Oil & Gas was down by 1.61% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Zomato up by 7.10%, Maruti Suzuki up by 4.81%, ITC up by 3.94%, Mahindra & Mahindra up by 3.29% and Hindustan Unilever up by 2.96%. On the flip side, Larsen & Toubro down by 4.29%, Power Grid down by 3.48%, Tech Mahindra down by 1.58%, Ultratech Cement down by 1.57% and HCL Tech down by 1.43% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) in its latest data report has showed that the India’s fiscal deficit touched 56.7 per cent of the Budget Estimate (BE) level of Rs 16.13 lakh crore at the end of December 2024 (April-December).

In actual terms, the fiscal deficit -- the gap between expenditure and revenue -- was Rs 9.14 lakh crore during the April-December 2024-25. For the same period last financial year, fiscal deficit was at Rs 9.8 lakh crore, or 55 per cent of BE. 

According to the data report, total receipts stood at Rs 23.18 lakh crore, while overall expenditure in April to December was at Rs 32.32 lakh crore. They were 72.3 per cent and 67 per cent of this fiscal year's budget target. Total receipts in the year-earlier period were at 76.3 per cent of estimate, while expenditure was at 67.8 per cent a year earlier.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23478.00, down by 30.40 points or 0.13% after trading in a range of 23318.30 and 23632.45. There were 21 stocks advancing against 29 stocks declining on the index. 

The top gainers on Nifty were Trent up by 8.77%, Maruti Suzuki up by 4.70%, Tata Consumer up by 4.43%, Eicher Motors up by 3.81% and Mahindra & Mahindra up by 3.58%. On the flip side, Larsen & Toubro down by 4.36%, Bharat Electronics down by 3.74%, Power Grid down by 3.43%, HDFC Life Insurance down by 2.87% and Grasim Industries down by 2.61% were the top losers.
