Delhi Assembly Polls: Arvind Kejriwal announces Free bus rides for students
Jan-17-2025

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has unveiled a significant poll promise for students ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly election. Arvind Kejriwal announced that if AAP retains power, male students in Delhi schools and colleges will receive free bus services and a 50% concession on metro fares. This announcement comes amidst a series of freebie announcements aimed at strengthening AAP's voter base ahead of the elections.

While addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said, ‘We want to make transportation for students accessible. We are working on a model to make bus rides free for students in Delhi if AAP wins the polls.’ Emphasizing the importance of education accessibility, AAP chief said, ‘The AAP government gives maximum importance to education. The poor miss out on education because they cannot afford travel. If we form the government again, we will provide free bus services to male students, just like we currently offer for female students.’

The former Delhi CM also sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the central government to approve a 50 per cent discount on metro fares for students. In his letter, Kejriwal emphasised that both the central and Delhi governments share the financial burden of metro services. Thus, he argued, both should share the cost of providing metro fare discounts for students. Currently, Delhi offers a free bus service for women, allowing them to travel fare-free on all AC and non-AC buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation.

Delhi will head to the polls on February 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8. AAP, which is aiming for its third consecutive term in power, has already announced candidates for all 70 Assembly seats.
